Simu Liu, who starred in ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ is set to play the villain in Netflix’s ‘Atlas,’ a sci-fi thriller starring Jennifer Lopez. Simu Liu is ready to show some edginess after establishing himself as one of the key pillars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next phases. According to Deadline, he is set to play the antagonist in Netflix’s Atlas, which stars Jennifer Lopez. Sterling K. Brown and Abraham Popoola have also been cast in supporting roles in the film, which is directed by Brad Peyton. The most recent draught of the script, based on Leo Sardarian’s original screenplay, is being written by Aron Eli Coleite.

Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell are producing, as are Peyton and Jeff Fierson for ASAP Entertainment, and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina for Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions. Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, through their Berlanti/Schechter Films, have also recently joined as producers. Mike McGrath will executive produce alongside Courtney Baxter and Matt Schwartz.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, a Marvel film released last summer, had one of the biggest openings following the pandemic reset. It would go on to be a huge success, grossing $432 million at the global box office and cementing Liu as a future MCU building block. This latest edgy villain role is just one example of how Liu has diversified his future slate with roles in a variety of genres.

He will have the opportunity to showcase his comedic talents in the Warner Bros. film, Barbie, which also stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, next summer. He also has the Mark Wahlberg-starring romantic comedy One True Loves and Arthur the King. CAA, Authentic Talent, and Literary Management are his agents. Regarding Brown, he is trying to expand his film slate after the conclusion of his NBC drama This Is Us in May. Honk for Jesus, a Focus drama, will follow. Save Your Soul, which debuts over the Labor Day holiday.
