She-Hulk has made an appearance in the MCU some 42 years after making her comic book debut.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, a new Disney+ series from Marvel Studios, stars Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters, a driven young lawyer and a single woman whose life and career take an unusual turn when she unintentionally ingests the gamma-radiated blood of her cousin Dr. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), better known to us all as the Hulk.
Though advised by Bruce, Jennifer first rejects the idea of becoming a superhero or even an Avenger like her more well-known cousin since she manages her transformations into a big, green monster-woman far better than her cousin ever was able to. She simply wants to go about her usual life and continue her legal profession. The universe, however, has different ideas for the woman who becomes known as She-Hulk since this is the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The last TV installment of the MCU’s Phase 4 is She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, which is both fundamentally a part of the universe and fundamentally unique from anything that has come before. Bruce, Emil Blonsky The Abomination (Tim Roth), and Sorcerer Supreme Wong (Benedict Wong), all well-known MCU figures, make early appearances in the tale, with more to follow and earlier MCU events being referenced. In addition, the show is a straight-up comedy in which a single, working woman deals with the challenges and victories of landing a job, navigating the dating scene, connecting with friends and family, and figuring out how to make it all work while also occasionally changing into a strong and menacing green giant.
The comedic elements of Jennifer’s story—as well as her occasionally habit of breaking the fourth wall and speaking directly to the audience, which she did long before Deadpool—come directly from her comic book persona, who starred in her own comic books, such as The Savage She-Hulk and The Sensational She-Hulk while additionally making appearances in runs of The Avengers and Fantastic Four. The enormous use of motion capture to bring She-Hulk and her cousin, the Hulk, to life was a component of that epic scale. Tatiana Maslany had less experience than Mark Ruffalo, who had a decade of playing Bruce Banner, but she immediately found her feet, according to Coiro.
Gao believes that Jennifer’s story, her life as a modern woman (with a twist), and the show’s unrestricted female gaze are most important. The fact that the majority of the show’s behind-the-scenes talent is female also serves as a “breath of fresh air” for viewers who may not have yet found a character they can identify with in the MCU.
