Mari Yamamoto who recently starred in Pachinko, has joined Legendary’s Monsterverse and will appear in the franchise’s untitled television spinoff for Apple TV+ in an undisclosed role, according to a report from Deadline. Production of the upcoming series is still in progress.

In addition to Yamamoto’s appearance in the show, other previously revealed cast members include Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, who played John Walker in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Elisa Lasowski. Along with Kiersey Clemons (Dope), Ren Watabe (461 Days of Bento), and Joe Tippett, Anna Sawai, who most recently appeared in F9, will also be featured in the series. The characters that the group of performers will play have not yet been given any specifics.

The untitled television series will follow one family’s quest to unearth its buried secrets and a legacy connecting them to the covert organisation known as Monarch in the wake of the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that levelled San Francisco and the startling realisation that monsters are real. The untitled series is produced for Apple TV+ by Legendary Television and executive produced by showrunner Chris Black and co-creator Matt Fraction. The first two episodes will be directed by Emmy Award-nominated director Matthew Shakman, who will also serve as executive producer.

Godzilla, a reboot of the franchise, was released in 2014, marking the start of the Monsterverse. Due to its favourable reviews, the franchise was expanded with the release of Kong: Skull Island, a standalone King Kong movie set in the same universe. This movie also received favourable reviews. The Monsterverse returned in 2021 with the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, which pitted the two titular titans against one another in their ultimate battle. Godzilla: King of the Monsters, a Godzilla sequel, stomped its way into theatres in 2019 to mixed reviews.

Another movie, which will be released on March 15, 2024, is already in production, so the franchise’s momentum isn’t slowing down either. Fans wonder which animals, both old and new, will be returning in the near future as the world of the titans continues to grow with the announcement of a live-action television series. There is no established date for the untitled Monsterverse series’ premiere.
