Lili Reinhart on the conclusion of Riverdale

The Riverdale starlet Lili Reinhart jumped at the chance to feature in and executive produce her first Netflix movie. The 25-year-old is prepared to re-establish herself outside of the beloved character Betty Cooper, and Look Both Ways signals the start of that next chapter. The popular CW series is scheduled to finish after seven seasons next year.

The episode, which premiered on Netflix on Wednesday, centres on Natalie, an aspirational woman who tests positive for pregnancy the night before graduating from college. After that, her life splits into two distinct timelines: one where she stays in Texas and has a little child, and the other where she doesn’t have a child and relocates to Los Angeles to pursue her ambition of becoming an animator.

Reinhart was drawn to the film because of its message that there is no one right or wrong route in life. It is directed by “Rafiki” director Wanuri Kahiu and stars Danny Ramirez, David Corenswet, and Aisha Dee.

What brought you to the project and how were you originally contacted about it?

In fact, in between takes on the “Riverdale” set, I read the screenplay. There was no incorrect route, which is something I truly admired and respected about Natalie’s character. I believe that we have a tendency to fixate on the notion of when we will get married when we will have children, and what our careers will entail. With that kind of thinking, I believe we occasionally set ourselves up for failure.

You said you helped choose the director; tell us what made Kahiu the right choice

We were looking for a female director for this film, and we were particularly hoping to find someone who was a mother. We wanted to ensure that our filmmaker would be a professional director who also managed parenthood because I am not a mother. And we were fortunate to find Wanuri, whom I thought would give “Look Both Ways” a grounded reality and elevate it beyond a rom-com. I’ll use it, but I feel like it could be doing the movie a disservice because I believe it to be more than that.

Which aspects of Natalie did you relate to?

Unquestionably, she has career ambitions. Though she also desired a romantic relationship, she wished to protect her interests. However, I believe that the primary cause was professional aspiration, as she aspired to become an animator and went to school to do so. While I didn’t attend acting school, I always knew it was what I wanted to do and had my heart set on it. And I can safely say that even if I had given birth to a child while I was still a young mother, I would have made every effort to continue acting and pursuing it.
