Ewan McGregor recently talked about Liam Neeson’s comeback to the Obi-Wan Kenobi television series as Qui-Gon Jinn. After his character died in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, fans hoped that Neeson would return as a Force ghost. This was Neeson’s first and final appearance in a Star Wars film. Neeson’s comeback did not appear likely until the Obi-Wan series was announced, despite the fact that he was hinted to at the conclusion of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.

In the brand-new Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series, McGregor made his legendary character comeback after 17 years. The latest film in the massive Star Wars franchise finds the titular Jedi Master exiled on the desert planet Tatooine and tasked with guarding a young Luke Skywalker. It is set ten years after the demise of the Jedi Order and the rise of the Galactic Empire in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.

While at Fan Expo in Boston, Massachucetts, McGregor talked about Neeson’s return as Qui-Gon in Obi-Wan Kenobi. McGregor admitted that as a young actor, he always looked up to Neeson, calling him one of his heroes. He said, “Liam is a hero of mine. Liam has got to be, I don’t know, ten years, maybe a bit more, older than I. So when I was growing up and wanting to be an actor, I was always watching Liam Neeson’s work, and he was involved in some beautiful work as a younger actor. And so to get the chance to work with him and to have this great relationship that we got to create together is fantastic, and to get the chance to work with himself again on the series right at the end.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi permitted a number of cameos and character comebacks from the prequel movies due to the time period in which the series is set. These included Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader, Bonnie Piesse as Aunt Beru, and Joel Edgerton as Uncle Owen. One significant cameo, though, was saved until the series’ finale. Following Kenobi’s battle with Reva the Third Sister (Moses Ingram), Neeson makes an appearance as the Force ghost of Kenobi’s former teacher, Qui-Gon. When the episode first aired, viewers responded favourably to Qui-homecoming, Gon’s and today McGregor discusses the sequence.
