The Empress, a planned German Netflix Original historical love drama series based on the courtship and early years of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, was written by Katharina Eyssen. Lena Stahl, Janna Maria Nandzik, and Bernd Lange all contributed to the series’ writing. The series is co-directed by Katrin Gebbe and Florian Cossen.

What is The Empress’s plot?

Netflix provided the following synopsis for The Empress:
When the rebellious Elisabeth met the Emperor of Austria, the young couple’s heady love utterly upended the power structure at the Viennese court. Following the wedding, the young empress must establish herself not just against her power-hungry mother-in-law, Sophie, but also against Franz’s brother Maxi, who yearns for the throne (and for Sisi).

When enemy forces form on the Habsburg Empire’s frontiers, the people of Vienna rebel against the Emperor. In order to show herself as the true empress and a beacon of hope for the people, Elisabeth must discover who she can trust and what the cost is.

Elisabeth von Wittelsbach was Emperor Franz Joseph’s wife and the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s Empress. Elisabeth Wittelsbach, born into the royal Bavarian House of Wittelsbach, married Franz Joseph at the age of sixteen and was quickly forced to settle into the life of the Habsbourg court, much to her chagrin.

Elisabeth was at differences with her mother-in-law Archduchess Sophie in the early years of her rule as the Empress of Austria because she raised her grandchildren on her own, claiming that the Empress was too young to care for numerous children at once. Elisabeth eventually won her husband over by arguing that she should be allowed to travel with her daughters and spend more time with them. Sadly, Elisabeth would be held accountable for the passing of her oldest child, Princess Sophie, who passed away in Budapest, Hungary, from a severe case of diarrhoea and a high fever.

Elisabeth’s mental health would be affected for the rest of her life by Princess Sophie’s death and the events that followed. Elisabeth was not unkind, but she was unmotherly to all of her living offspring for the rest of her life. This was made worse by Archduchess Sophie, who believed that since the princess had died, she should be the one to raise the kids rather than the Empress. Elisabeth maintained a bracelet with her daughter’s image on it and hung photographs in her dwellings for the rest of her life.

Who are The Empress’s cast members?

Devrim Lingnau, a Turkish-German actress, will play the major role of Elisabeth von Wittelsbach in her Netflix debut. In Germany, Lingnau is most recognised for her roles as Carmilla in Carmilla and Cäcilia in Auerhas. Newcomer Philip Froissant takes on the role of Emperor Franz Joseph. The Munich-born actor rose to prominence in 2021 after appearing in the Netflix Original film Black Island.
Louise is played by Sveneja Jung. Jung previously appeared as Sonja Tannhaus in one episode of the Netflix Original series Dark (Das Paradies).
