What is the Devil in Ohio storyline?

The 2017 book of the same name by author Daria Polatin will serve as the inspiration for Netflix’s Devil in Ohio. Because it is based on a genuine story and Polatin originally wrote a TV pilot based on it, this limited series kind of completes the circle. During an interview with Book Room Reviews, Polatin addressed this:

I wanted to write about what happens to people who live in isolated areas, so I created a TV pilot about a cult. Then I had to recount the genuine story of a teenage girl who escaped a demonic cult and moved in with her psychiatrist’s family. A novel seemed like an interesting way to tell that story, and true events inspired Mae, Jules, and the Mathis family. Devil in Ohio delves into the perennial conflict between good and evil, as well as the courage required to overcome hardship in one’s history.

The following is a synopsis from Polatin’s official website for Devil in Ohio:
When Jules Mathis, fifteen, returns home from school to find a strange girl sitting in her kitchen, her psychiatrist mother explains that Mae is one of her hospital patients and will be staying with their family for a few days. Mae, on the other hand, is soon wearing Jules’ clothes, sleeping in her room, moving Jules out of her position on the school paper, and flirting with Jules’ crush. And Mae has no plans to go.

Then things go strange. Jules walks in on a half-dressed Mae and is taken aback by what he sees: a pentagram etched into Mae’s back. Jules puts together evidence and realises that Mae is a survivor of a bizarre cult in a nearby town. And the cult will go to any length to reclaim Mae.
