In accordance with their overall agreement with the streaming service, Higher Ground Productions—founded by former US president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama—is planning to make another movie for Netflix. Colman Domingo will portray the late civil rights pioneer Bayard Rustin in the film Rustin, which tells his life story. Here is all the information you require.
George C. Wolfe, an Emmy nominee who previously worked on Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which starred the late Chadwick Boseman, will helm Rustin. Dustin Lance Black, who won an Oscar for his screenplay for the 2008 film Milk starring Sean Penn, wrote the script for Rustin. Tobias Schliessler (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and A Wrinkle in Time) is directing the film, and Toni-Leslie James is designing the costumes.

What’s the storyline in Rustin?

Rustin is a Netflix film based on the life of late civil rights campaigner Bayard Rustin, who was a strategist and activist who promoted nonviolent social change techniques for more than a half-century. He is best remembered for organising the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, which served as the backdrop for Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” address.
His work was occasionally hampered by his controversial past, which included participation in the Young Communist League, a three-year prison sentence for refusing to cooperate with the military on conscientious grounds, and his open homosexuality, which included an arrest for obscene vagrancy.

Prior to the 1963 march, Senator Strom Thurmond condemned Rustin on the Senate floor. Rustin died in 1987 after visiting Haiti to investigate the possibility of democratic reform in conjunction with an upcoming election. In 2013, President Barack Obama posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Bayard Rustin.
