The Serpent Queen, an upcoming series on STARZ, has just debuted a new teaser, giving us our first look at the royal historical drama with a more cutting edge than most. The show will debut on STARZ on September 11 at 8:00 p.m. ET, and following that, it will be streamable for international viewers on the STARZ app and the STARZPLAY app.

The show focuses on the life of Catherine de Medici, one of history’s most significant figures who rose to become one of France’s most powerful emperors. In the aptly named “Medici Bitch” season premiere, we will follow Catherine through flashbacks as she tells Rahima, her new servant, about her life to date. When Catherine, an orphan, marries into the uncivilised 16th-century French court at age 14, her narrative officially begins. Given that Catherine is officially a commoner, the marriage is highly rare, especially for the time. But she will become a princess because of her uncle, Pope Clement (Charles Dance). But when Catherine learns that her new husband is unfaithful, her hopes for a marriage based on love are dashed. Catherine will have to learn to survive through her own cunning and savagery when all of her innocent expectations are destroyed.

The Serpent Queen's trailer reveals Samantha Morton as Catherine de Medici 2

We get a glimpse of Samantha Morton’s Serpent Queen in the brand-new trailer, which was released today. The trailer depicts both the admirable and reprehensible aspects of Catherine de Medici’s life as it is chronicled in a fourth-wall-breaking biographical format. She would later be dubbed “The Serpent Queen” for her infamous lifestyle. The historical drama’s trailer sets an energetic, highly punk tone by using a contemporary soundtrack.

Liv Hill portrays Catherine de Medici’s younger self, and historical drama veteran Morton plays the older Catherine de Medici. Along with Rupert Everett, Colm Meaney, Kiruna Stamell, Barry Atsma, Alex Heath, Amrita Acharia, Enzo Cilenti, Antonia Clarke, Beth Goddard, Raza Jaffrey, Ray Panthaki, Nicholas Burns, and Danny Kirrane all appear in the series.
