The first trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods has released at Comic-Con 2022. Following the release of the first Shazam! in 2019 to strong critical acclaim and a $366 million global box office haul, a sequel was quickly announced. The sequel was initially scheduled to release in 2023, but due to a change in the DCEU’s release schedule, it will instead be released in December 2022.
Shazam, Billy Batson, Freddy Freeman, and the other kids will encounter a brand-new threat in the form of powerful goddesses in the first Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailer, which was unveiled during WB’s Comic-Con panel. The difficulty of Shazam to manage with a superhero family while still feeling inadequate in his own job is highlighted in the trailer. The teaser also shows the Shazam family engaged in a titanic dragon battle while teasing the first sight at Zegler’s character and references to Justice League members.
It’s interesting to note that the Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailer incorporates scenes from Justice League and Aquaman, further cementing the DCEU’s interconnectedness. It’s been a while since the DCEU felt like a cohesive universe because movies like The Batman and Joker have resided in separate realms. In the series finale of HBO Max’s Peacemaker, director James Gunn teased the Justice League’s appearance, which featured Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Ezra Miller’s The Flash. Things now appear to be expanding even further with the addition of Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam.
In addition to returning actors Jack Dylan Grazer, Asher Angel, Adam Brody, Meagan Good, DJ Cotrona, Ross Butler, and Djimon Hounsou, the David F. Sandberg-directed sequel also stars Helen Mirren as Hespera, Lucy Liu as Kalypso, and Rachel Zegler in an unspecified role. Chris Morgan and Henry Gayden both return to write the sequel’s script.
