Apple Original Films has acquired the rights to Causeway, a brand-new movie starring and produced by Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence and directed by Lila Neugebauer, as part of its ongoing effort to diversify its film slate. Later this year, the military drama, which was made in collaboration with A24, will debut in theatres and on Apple TV+. There is no firm date for release.

The movie’s finer points are still being kept a secret. What is known is that Brian Tyree Henry, an Emmy Award nominee, will co-star with Lawrence. According to the basic plot summary, the movie is a “intimate depiction” of a soldier who is having to adjust to her daily life after returning to her home in New Orleans. Principal photography on the movie, which was first announced in April 2019, began on June 17 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The A24 movie was filmed in New Orleans, and Ottessa Moshfegh, Luke Goebel, and Elizabeth Sanders wrote the script. For Excellent Cadaver, Lawrence collaborates with Justine Ciarrocchi on production. Neugebauer not only directs but also serves as executive producer. IAC Films, IPR.VC, Excellent Cadaver, and A24 are the producers of “Causeway.” The movie is the newest endeavour for Apple Original Films and Lawrence, who is also attached to star in and produce the unnamed Sue Mengers biopic that Paolo Sorrentino is now developing with Justine Ciarrocchi.

After “CODA,” which the streamer purchased at Sundance for a record $25 million, won the Oscar for best picture, Apple made a stir in the movie industry. Apple beat Netflix to the top honour at the Academy Awards with that triumph, making it the first streaming service to do so. Apple has continued to be aggressive, securing the rights to “Cha Cha Real Smooth,” another Sundance favourite, as well as Brad Pitt’s next Formula One racing thriller.

On the route to Apple, Causeway has undergone various adjustments. The movie’s original title was Red, White, and Wonder, and Scott Rudin served as one of its producers, according to The Hollywood Reporter. After THR released an investigation on alleged abusive behaviour by Rudin, former colleagues believe that Rudin severed ties with the project more than a year ago.The streaming service promises a premiere for Causeway later this year in cinemas and on Apple TV+, even though Apple has not yet confirmed a release date.
