Sony has made the official announcement of the release date for Insidious 5, returning to the big screen after a five-year sabbatical. This is fantastic news because there haven’t been many updates on the movie’s progress since franchise star Patrick Wilson announced in February that filming would begin in the spring of 2022.

The release date of Insidious 5 has been set for July 7, 2023. This means that Insidious: The Last Key, the most recent film in the horror series, has been in theatres for more than five years. Wilson, who portrays Josh Lambert in the show, will not only make his first directing debut with this eagerly awaited sequel, but also make his first appearance in the series since his cameo in Insidious: Chapter 3.

Insidious centres on the Lambert family, beginning with the young kid Dalton (Ty Simpkins) going into a puzzling coma that somehow allows him access to The Further, a supernatural realm populated by ghosts and demons. The curse had been passed down to Dalton from his father Josh, it was discovered as the series progressed. Josh had suppressed memories of his own encounters with an evil spirit as a child. Josh was able to travel back in time to his early years and ultimately put an end to the curse thanks to some wacky ideas about parallel universes and non-linear time.

Insidious 5 will be released in July 2023, which puts it in the middle of a very busy month. Another much awaited fifth instalment in a successful franchise, the untitled Indiana Jones 5, is finally released just one week before the movie’s debut on June 30. Mission: Impossible-Dead Reckoning Part One then comes out just a week after Insidious.

Despite generally mixed reviews for all four films, the Insidious series has been a fan favourite since its debut in 2011. The first movie alone made over $97 million against a $1.5 million budget, which helped boost Blumhouse Productions’ reputation. The subsequent Insidious sequels, which had a total $25 million production budget, ended up becoming even bigger movie office hits.
