Netflix is developing a new series called One Hundred Years in Solitude, the first-ever adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel of the same name, in an effort to increase its creation of worldwide quality content. The project was first unveiled in March 2019 and is now back in active development after a three-year hiatus.
The series will be executive produced by Marquez’s sons Rodrigo Garcia and Gonzalo Garca Barcha, who felt it was critical that the One Hundred Years of Solitude series be made entirely in Spanish. Everything else we know about Netflix’s One Hundred Years of Solitude is as follows:
What is the story of One Hundred Years of Solitude about?
As previously stated, Netflix’s One Hundred Years of Solitude is the first adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s internationally recognised 1967 novel of the same name.
It is an epic novel about seven generations of the Buenda family that spans a century of volatile Latin American history, from the postcolonial 1820s to the 1920s. In the middle of a marsh, Patriarch José Arcadio Buenda constructs the ideal city of Macondo. Initially successful, the village attracted Gypsies and hucksters, including the old writer Melquades, who serves as a stand-in for the author. A nearly five-year tropical storm nearly destroys the town, and by the sixth Buenda generation, its physical decay is matched by the family’s wickedness. A hurricane eventually wipes out all remains of the city.
Who plays the characters in One Hundred Years of Solitude?
As of July 2022, no cast members for Netflix’s One Hundred Years of Solitude had been announced, but as development progresses, we’ll find out soon enough.
When will One Hundred Years of Solitude be available on Netflix?
One Hundred Years of Solitude is still in active development, which means that the script is being created and updated, with pre-production to follow. We’ll keep you updated as we find out more. According to Production Weekly, filming will take place in Colombia.
Netflix hasn’t said how many episodes this series will contain, but six to eight is a safe bet given the Netflix standard these days.
Netflix hasn’t disclosed any release dates for One Hundred Years of Solitude, but given its early development stage, we can presumably expect it around late 2023 or even 2024.
