Following a massive heart attack, Randal decides to make a film about his life working at the Quick Stop convenience store, as fans saw in the official teaser for Kevin Smith’s Clerks 3 on Wednesday.
As Lionsgate and Fathom Events prepare to release the sequel in theatres for two nights only on September 13 and 15, the trailer shows Randal, played by Jeff Anderson, enlisting fellow clerks Dante, Elias, Jay, and Silent Bob, played by Smith, to make a film about his life at the convenience store that started it all.
Smith tweeted a selfie from a hospital bed in February 2018 after informing his fans that he had survived a “massive” heart attack. “I would’ve died tonight if I hadn’t cancelled show 2 to go to the hospital,” the Clerks director continued. But for the time being, I’m still above ground!”
So it should come as no surprise that Randal in Clerks 3 experiences a heart attack that is close to being deadly. This spurred Smith to write and direct the sequel. Just before Fred Armisen, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ben Affleck make quick appearances in the trailer, Randal explains, “Everything in this script is something either I or someone I know said.”
In September, more than 700 movie theatres in the United States will screen Clerks III. Both showings will include an exclusive look behind the scenes with filmmaker Smith and the cast.
Smith’s blockbuster movie, Clerks, was released in 1994. Clerks III will also star Brian O’Halloran as Dante, Trevor Fehrman as Elias, and Jason Mewes as Jay. Clerks 2, the sequel, debuted in theatres in 2006 and made $24 million in the United States.
Years were spent searching for funding for Clerks 3, and for the first time, the most recent sequel was exclusively filmed in New Jersey.
“Clerks III is the epitome of event cinema, especially if you’re a Kevin Smith fan or an independent film buff.” This film completes the story that sparked a cinematic revolution. “And there is no better partner in the world of event cinema than Fathom Events to bring it to the fans on the big screen,” Eda Kowan, Lionsgate’s executive vp acquisitions and co-productions, said in a statement.
