In the Hulu drama series Black Cake, created by Women of the Movement creator Marissa Jo Cerar, Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Films, and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, Ashley Thomas has been cast as the male lead opposite Mia Isaac and Adrienne Warren. Additionally, Zetna Fuentes (This Is Us) has been chosen to replace Andrew Dosunmu as the pilot episode’s director.
Black Cake, a family drama wrapped in a murder mystery with a wide cast of characters and a global location that spans decades, was written by Cerar based on the book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Jamaica, Rome, Scotland, England, and Southern California are among locations where the story is set.
Covey (Isaac), a runaway bride, vanishes into the surf off the coast of Jamaica in the late 1960s. It is unknown whether she drowned or is a suspect in her husband’s murder. A flash drive containing previously unrecorded tales of Eleanor Bennett’s voyage from the Caribbean to America is left to her two estranged children, Byron (Thomas) and Benny (Warren), when the widow Eleanor Bennett dies her fight with cancer fifty years later in California. Eleanor tells these stories, shocking her children and upending everything they believed they knew about the history of their family.
Brilliant ocean scientist Thomas’ Byron Bennett has a reputation for hard effort that has earned him a leader in his area and a well-liked social media influencer. His relationship with his mother, Eleanor, comes in second only to his professional achievement. After she passes away, Byron is tasked with carrying out her final request. This assignment forces a reunion with his estranged sister, Benny, and unearths terrifying secrets that force Byron to reevaluate everything he believed to be true about himself and his family.
