When we last left Amazon’s The Boys, several characters were on the verge of redemption, but a slew of new threats had been revealed or promised as being a key part of Season 3. So here’s some good news: the sitcom is currently filming fresh episodes, according to star Laz Alonso. In fact, Alonso, who was recently interviewed by Collider’s Steve Weintraub about his next feature The Wrath of Man, stated that they are “between one-fourth and halfway through” filming the new season.

In addition, Alonso was able to reveal that Season 3 isn’t simply more story-driven, but that creator Eric Kripke is “becoming darker and darker” with each season. New Season 3 cast member Jensen Ackles is a huge part of it; the Supernatural alum is rejoining with Kripke to play Soldier Boy, the first famous superhero who fought in WWII. According to Alonso, the new character “enabled [Kripke] to not only bring in a historically dark figure, but it also makes all of the other ensemble Supes darker as well.” (Given that one of the Supes was a real Nazi last season, it’s saying a lot.)

The Boys Season 3 Bloodier Than Season 2 3

If you’re a fan of the Boys, you already know how thrilling this is, but it gets even better. The Boys has never shied away from graphic depictions of violence (remember, one character’s literal talent is the ability to explode people’s brains with a single thought). Season 3, on the other hand, may take onscreen brutality to a whole new level.

Here is the official interview!

Alonso explained Season 3’s approach to blood:

“I’ll put it to you this way. I was talking to the head makeup artist and she’s in charge of ordering the blood — that’s one of her many jobs. She told me that all of Season 2… When you talk about bulk, I don’t think they used over a gallon of blood in Season 2, believe it or not. Season 3, we’re already at three and a half gallons of blood. So that should give you a little indication of where it’s going.”

Alonso also says that so far, production has gone relatively smoothly in terms of COVID, with no stoppages and daily testing. The biggest consequence is that Kripke hasn’t been on set this season, due to all the factors that come these days with traveling between the United States and Canada. This has meant that while Alonso and Kripke have had a conversation about Mother’s Milk’s journey in the new season, for more day-to-day stuff they’ve had to find other ways to communicate.
