Netflix debuted the first image from Kong: Skull Island, an upcoming animated series based in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, during Geeked Week. Set on the namesake mysterious island where King Kong resides, the animated series aims to add to the narrative of Legendary’s cinematic universe, which began with Godzilla in 2014. Netflix previewed a variety of forthcoming animation projects during Geeked Week, including a new anime series based on Kong: Skull Island. They also unveiled the series’ first official photo, which you can see below.

The artwork depicts a beach with two little humans standing inside King Kong’s massive footprint. While little is known about Skull Island, the animated series will follow a group of stranded individuals as they attempt to survive on an island inhabited by giant beasts. We don’t know when the series will take place in Legendary’s MonsterVerse timeline, but it will most likely take place before Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021. That’s because, at the conclusion of Godzilla vs. Kong, the huge primate departs from Skull Island and settles in Hollow Earth, a subterranean kingdom beneath the Earth’s crust.

However, based on the footprint in the opening image of the series, it’s safe to believe that Skull Island takes place after the events of Kong: Skull Island from 2017. Kong: Skull Island is a film set in the 1970s that depicts a military mission in which a group of unfortunate researchers become victims of the island’s various terrible animals. Kong: Skull Island debuted Legendary’s rendition of the primate, still a young creature that had not achieved its full size, with spectacular visuals and amazing monster fights.

The new image doesn’t provide much information. In actuality, it merely shows us two people kneeling in the middle of one of Kong’s massive handprints from above. Regardless, it seems that the series will incorporate some of the frightening themes that helped make the first Skull Island a hit in 2017. Aside from Kong, we may certainly expect to see the army of reptilian Skullcrawlers that made an appearance in the film.
Legendary is now working on a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, with Adam Wingard set to direct. Matt Shakman (WandaVision) is directing the first two episodes of a new live-action MonsterVerse series for Apple TV+, which the studio is developing.
