Top Gun: Maverick opened to a worldwide total of more than $250 million, breaking the record for the largest opening weekend for a picture over Memorial Day weekend in the United States and becoming the biggest debut for a Tom Cruise film. The domestic box office accounted for more than half of the worldwide biz, with $127 million earned during the three-day weekend, while international markets contributed $124 million, according to Paramount, with actuals expected to be higher.

The Tom Cruise-led sequel, which has been in theatres for nearly four decades, is already a hit after only one day of release. Top Gun: Maverick debuted in theatres on May 27 and is a sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun. Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Lewis Pullman, Jay Ellis, Bashir Salahuddin, Charles Parnell, Monica Barbaro, and Danny Ramirez are among the A-listers set to appear in the worldwide hit.
