The first trailer for the highly anticipated Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prequel series, Andor, has been released by Lucasfilm. Diego Luna returns to the Star Wars universe in the trailer. A second season of the show was confirmed Thursday at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California, along with the trailer. Season one will premiere with two episodes on August 31. Tony Gilroy, the showrunner, announced that 12 episodes have already been shot, with another 12 set to be shot in the fall.
The trailer gives fans their first look at the Rogue One spinoff series, which follows the eponymous character from his early days as a rebel spy through his efforts to free the galaxy from the Empire. The trailer shows plenty more fascinating world-building to come from the series, from views at the numerous new settings shown throughout the show to a different peek behind-the-scenes of the Empire’s offices. Gilroy has hinted that the show will take the long-running series in a variety of unexpected directions, including some substantial departures from Star Wars canon.
Along with Luna, Whitaker, and O’Reilly, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, and Kyle Soller will make their Star Wars franchise debuts in Andor. The series was first revealed in 2018 as Disney and Lucasfilm began development on a number of Star Wars projects for Disney+, with Zootopia’s Jared Bush creating Andor and Rogue One co-writer Tony Gilroy eventually taking over as showrunner. Andor’s production concluded in late 2021, and fans are finally getting their first look at the show.
Andor is based on Luna’s role from Rogue One and begins five years before the events of the film, with the second season covering the final four years before the events of the film. The series’ closing sequence will lead straight into Rogue One, according to Gilroy, the writer who unofficially took over directing duties on Rogue One and assisted in its development.
Andor will take a fresh look at the Star Wars universe, focusing on the title character’s quest to understand how he can make a difference. The series tells the story of the Empire’s budding revolt and how people and worlds became engaged. “It’s an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue,” the official synopsis states, “where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero.”
