The Netflix version of The Addams Family is still months away. As previously reported, a new live-action series based on the eccentric family is in the works, with Tim Burton set to direct. The show, titled Wednesday, stars Jenna Ortega (Scream, X) as an older version of Wednesday Addams in her college years after leaving the family estate.
The Addams Family is eerie, wacky, mysterious, and spooky, and it’s coming to Netflix this autumn. According to a poster found by Collider, Tim Burton, the iconic director who brought us two Batman films among many other great, gothic classics, is working on a Netflix series based on Wednesday Addams that will premiere this year.
Jenna Ortega, the star of the upcoming Scream film and the A24 horror film X, has had a busy year. She will portray the title character in Wednesday, a Netflix original comedy about the daughter of a dysfunctional family.
Tim Burton is most known for his work on Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the animated films Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie. He does, however, have a taste for more darker material, such as the musical Sweeney Todd, making him the ideal filmmaker to lend his voice to The Addams Family TV series. This is Burton’s first collaboration with Netflix and his first small-screen effort in more than 20 years.
The Addams Family debuted as a cartoon strip in the 1930s and has since gone on to become a household brand in television, movies, and video games. Most notably, the bizarre family starred in two excellent ’90s films and two less amazing animated films more lately.
Wednesday will centre on Morticia and Gomez’s kid as she attempts to navigate school life while dealing with her magical abilities. The show is being marketed as a sci-fi series for young adults.
Wednesday marks Tim Burton’s directorial debut on television, with the series created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. It depicts characters from Charles Addams’ classic Addams Family comic strip.
Jenna Ortega will star as Wednesday Addams, but other members of the family will also appear, albeit in a minor role with Wednesday in a new location. Other members of the Addams family who appear in the film include Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Luis Guzman as Gomez, Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley, and George Burcea as Lurch. Gwendoline Christie, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Thora Birch, Hunter Doohan, Percy Hynes White, and Georgie Farmer round out the cast.
