The officia trailer for Universal Pictures’ upcoming heart-pounding survival thriller Beast starring Idris Elba has been revealed. On August 19, the film will be released in theatres. Beast was adapted from an original story by Jaime Primak Sullivan by Ryan Engle (Rampage). Along with Bernard Bellew, Sullivan serves as executive producer for the picture.

The trailer begins with Idris Elba’s character, Dr. Nate Daniels, landing a plane in South Africa with his two children, Meredith (The Hate U Give, This is Us) and Norah (Leah Sava Jeffries) (Empire, Percy Jackson). After the recent death of Nate’s wife, the trio is on a trip to reconnect. They’re staying in a game reserve run by his old pal Martin Battles, who is played by Sharlto Copley.

The first few seconds seem to hint that this journey will be fairly normal and might actually be the healing experience that it was meant to be. That all changes when they find a man in the middle of the road saying that he had been attacked by a “devil.” Arriving in the man’s village, the group finds the residents slaughtered. They are assaulted by a bloodthirsty lion and locked inside their car when they leave. The rest of the teaser provides us pieces of the drama to come, such as Elba fighting the lion for survival, a gang of poachers coming across our heroes as they search for their wounded prey, and watching the lion make its way through the car window to close out the suspense-filled movie.

The synopsis of the movie reads as: “The film is pulse-pounding new thriller about a father and his two teenage daughters who find themselves hunted by a massive rogue lion intent on proving that the savannah has but one apex predator. Elba plays Dr. Nate Samuels, a recently widowed husband who returns to South Africa, where he first met his wife, on a long-planned trip with their daughters to a game reserve. But what begins as a journey of healing jolts into a fearsome fight for survival when a lion, a survivor of blood-thirsty poachers who now sees all humans as the enemy, begins stalking them.”

Elba’s project Beast is not the only one that fans may anticipate. On August 9th, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, starring Idris Elba as Knuckles, will be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Last year, it was announced that the Luther film, a follow-up to Elba’s critically acclaimed drama series, had begun production. Fans have dreamed for years that Elba will be the next James Bond. Producer Barbara Broccoli confirmed earlier this year that his name is still being discussed.
