Wings of Fire, a new Netflix event series based on author Tui T. Sutherland’s fantasy novel series of the same name, was in development. However, after a year of preparation, the project was cancelled in May 2022. Here’s what we knew about the project at the time, as well as what we know about its current state.
Tui T. Sutherland initially revealed the idea via Netflix in April 2021.

Dan Milano (Robot Chicken, Greg the Bunny, Warren the Ape), Christa Starr (Warren the Ape), and Justin Ridge (Warren the Ape) were the showrunners for Wings of Fire (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels). The series’ technical director was David S. Cheng (Megamind, Avatar, How to Train Your Dragon).
Ava DuVernay’s ARRAY production firm was planned to produce the film. Executive producer Tui T. Sutherland was also a member of the creative team. When the series was unveiled in April 2021, she commented on its progress.

The Wings of Fire animated series, created by Ava DuVernay, was supposed to adapt the family fantasy books by Tui T. Sutherland into ten 40-minute episodes, but that is no longer the case. “The series was centred around a brutal war that has waged between the dragon tribes who inhabit the epic realm of Pyrrhia for generations,” according to Deadline. Five young dragons will rise to end the slaughter and restore peace to the realm, according to prophesy. The Dragonets of Destiny – Clay, Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, and Sunny – have been raised and trained in secret since they were hatched, and now embark on an evolving quest that will bring them face to face with their true selves and the overwhelming scope of the savage war they are destined to end.”

What animation studio is involved for Wings of Fire?

Warner Bros. Animation would have been in charge of bringing the world of Wings of Fire to life for Netflix. Green Eggs and Ham, as well as the upcoming Skull Island anime about King Kong, are among their Netflix collaborations. Violaine Briat, who works as episodic director, Lila Martinez, who serves as a storyboard artist on the project, and Jean-Denis Haas, who serves as an animation supervisor, are among the individuals we’ve uncovered participating in the series.
Lila Martinez, who works on the project as a Storyboard Artist, shares some insight into the show’s production process and animation style.
