‘Fingernails,’ directed by Christos Nikou, stars Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley and Oscar winner Riz Ahmed. Apples, Nikou’s critically acclaimed debut film about a pandemic, was a buzz title at the Venice Film Festival in 2020. Sam Steiner and Apple’s co-writer Stavros Raptis collaborated on the script for his new project. Dirty Films, owned by Cate Blanchett, is producing alongside FilmNation Entertainment, which is also funding the film. Executive producer will be Jerome Duboz. Carey Mulligan was once a part of the project, but she is no longer involved.
A test that determines whether couples are actually in love has been discovered in the realm of surreal drama, which has been characterised to us as a “grounded sci-fi love story.” Love institutions have developed to assist couples in their endeavours. Anna (Buckley) is suspicious of the wonderful results she’s had with her longstanding boyfriend, so she goes to work as an assistant to Trevor (Ahmed), a mysterious and committed instructor, at a love institution. The interesting premise seems like ideal ground for a Greek new wave director.
The story’s light-heartedness while maintaining serious overtones has echoes of early Yorgos Lanthimos, with whom Nikou worked as an assistant director on Dogtooth (he was also AD on Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight). “We’ve been wanting to collaborate with Christos Nikou since viewing his incredibly creative debut,” said Ashley Fox, President of Production at FilmNation. We’re ecstatic to be a part of his next film. From the first page of the screenplay, we were drawn in by the romanticism and warmth of ‘Fingernails.’ It’s an amazing ideal crew that’s gathered around the movie, and we’re ecstatic to be a part of it.”
“The unique and incredible abilities of Jessie and Riz will wonderfully capture the weird humour, heart, and melancholy hidden in the center of Fingernails,” said Blanchett, Coco Francini, and Andrew Upton of Dirty Films in a joint statement. We’re happy to have them and the FilmNation team on board to help bring Christos Nikou’s vision to reality.”
