Recently, Travis Scott did a concert in Miami, Florida six months after the Astroworld disaster in Houston, Texas which ended up with ten people losing their lives and hundreds injured after a stampede. Now, Travis Scott is going to be performing his first songs on a much bigger broadcast level, he has a performance lined up at this year’s Billboard Music Awards 2022.
On 9th May, Billboard confirmed the rapper will be joining other prominent figures of the music industry, Megan Thee Stallion, Ed Sheeran, Morgan Wallen and Latto, who have performance lined up at the award ceremony. The host of the Billboard Music Awards is Sean “Diddy” Combs, he also confirmed that Travis will be performing.
Sean “Diddy” Combs posted a video on Instagram in which he said, “I made a request, I made a demand. I said, ‘My brother Travis Scott has to perform. Diddy is hosting the show–I’m executive producing–he has to perform.’ And NBC said ‘yes’. So, it’s going down Sunday. Travis Scott will be performing.” The performance at the Billboard Music Awards will be “SICKO MODE” artist’s first award show appearance after the infamous tragedy which took place in November, 2021 during his Astroworld Music Festival in Houston, twenty five concertgoers were transported to hospital and ten died following a stampede.
After the tragedy, there was widespread public outcry regarding show’s organisers and Travis Scott faced severed backlash for his insensitive response to the loss of lives. About four hundred lawsuits were filed against him and all of them were clubbed into a class action suit. Scott took to social media, writing, “I’m absolutely devastated by what took place last night. My prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astroworld Festival.”
