Everything We Know So Far About Netflix’s The Sandman Series

the

The Sandman, based on the DC comic book, is one of the most anticipated shows to arrive on Netflix in 2022. Here’s an up-to-date guide to everything we know so far about the upcoming Netflix show, including the full cast breakdown, every first look released thus far, and information on which volumes will be covered. The show’s next major update is scheduled for Netflix’s Geeked Week in early June.
Of course, there have been several attempts to bring it to both the big and small screens — but Gaiman has consistently shot them down, waiting for the perfect opportunity. Most notably, in 2014, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Neil Gaiman collaborated on a film adaptation that ultimately fell apart due to creative differences. However, when Netflix approached Gaiman with the offer of faithfully serializing the comics, as well as a large budget and the promise of a stellar cast, it was difficult to say no.

The streamer confirmed in a press release in July 2019 that they were the first network to commit to a live-action adaptation of the Sandman graphic novels. In fact, by producing it, they would set a new record for the most expensive TV show produced by DC Entertainment. The dream team was assembled with showrunner Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman), producers David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight), and Gaiman.

What exactly is The Sandman on Netflix?

The Sandman is a saga that spans space and time, transporting us to mythical lands and strange realms. It’s packed with iconic figures, both historical and legendary, that you might recognize. William Shakespeare, Thor, Orpheus, and a slew of other characters appear. Then, given its location in the DC universe, expect sporadic appearances by DC canon characters such as Martian Manhunter and John Constantine. It also features some lesser-known DC characters, such as Element Girl and Hector Hall.
The comic’s ten volumes follow the titular character Dream of the Endless, also known as Morpheus, Kai’ckul, Sandman, and a slew of other names. His name, like his appearance, changes depending on who sees him.

The first proper look at the show in action was provided by Netflix’s TUDUM event in September (after a first look behind the scenes at Geeked Week in June 2021). While only a few minutes long, the teaser shows Roderick Burgess (Charles Dance) and his Order of Ancient Mysterious occultists performing a ritual to capture and imprison Death. The ritual, however, does not go as planned, as Dream (Tom Sturridge) is captured rather than his sister, kicking off the series.

Is there a release date for Netflix’s The Sandman?

Filming for The Sandman began in October 2020. Naturally, the pandemic caused significant delays, causing it to begin later. Principal photography is now finished, and the team is working on post-production. Unfortunately, no release date has been set, but the show has been added to Netflix’s lineup for 2022. We’re expecting a summer release date, but we haven’t heard anything from Netflix yet.
The show’s social media account resurfaced in April 2022, with the most recent message on April 19th stating that new information on The Sandman will be released between June 6th and June 10th as part of Netflix’s Geeked Week.
