Biographical comedy film Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is set to be released in the fall of 2022 on The Roku Channel. Directed by Eric Appel from a screenplay he co-wrote with the film’s subject, “Weird Al” Yankovic“. The film stars Daniel Radcliffe as Yankovic, with Evan Rachel Wood, Rainn Wilson, Toby Huss, and Julianne Nicholson in supporting roles. The project was first announced in January, with production set to begin in early February in Los Angeles. The film will be available exclusively on the Roku Channel and is the first original Roku biopic. Funny Or Die and Tango are collaborating on the project.
The feature-length comedy follows the titular most successful comedic recording artist of all time. Yankovic is the best-selling comedic recording artist of all time, known for mocking and parodying the works of his musical contemporaries. Radcliffe managed to rock Yankovic’s distinctive character, which is nearly a full character in the singer’s biography and will undoubtedly be significant in the film, based on the teaser trailer. The trailer for the film has been released and Daniel’s makeover for this role will amaze you. He is seen wearing the curly bob hairdo of the iconic musician and displaying his physique. The clip is set to the beat of Yankovic’s spoof of Madonna’s famous songs “Like a Virgin,” “Like a Surgeon.” The queen of pop, played by Evan Rachel Wood, is also in the film; however, she is only seen briefly at the end of the first trailer, with her back to the camera.
This also implies that we may expect to witness parts of Yankovic that we aren’t used to seeing, such as his partying hard mode and his self-described depraved lifestyle. Even serious performers struggle to sell over 10 million albums, win the Grammy five times, and achieve six platinum records, as Yankovic has done. Yankovic’s comic concerts for shouting crowds across the country will be depicted in the film, and Radcliffe will don his rockstar image.
