The new political series Gaslit tells the story of one of America’s most notorious political scandals. Gaslit examines the Watergate scandal and the untold stories of the people involved, based on the first season of the podcast Slow Burn. The scandal eventually forced President Nixon to resign after it was revealed that he had approved a cover-up of his administration’s break-in to the Democratic National Committee.
Martha Mitchell, played by Julia Roberts, is at the heart of this series. Mitchell was the wife of John N. Mitchell, Nixon’s attorney general (Sean Penn). She was the first to reveal the president’s involvement in Watergate, which resulted in a slew of consequences in both her public and personal life. When the scandal became public, John Mitchell, a close friend of Richard Nixon, was forced to choose between his wife and the president. Martha was imprisoned in a California hotel in the days following the Watergate break-in to prevent her from speaking to the press. Even after her release, the Nixon administration attempted to discredit her by spreading rumors about Martha having a drinking problem and psychiatric issues.
On March 16, 2022, the official trailer for Gaslit was released. The trailer depicts Julia Roberts as Martha Mitchell, who is thrust into the spotlight after speaking out about Nixon’s role in Watergate. A reporter is shown in the trailer asking, “Should the Nixon administration be afraid of you?” Martha responds, “Well, I think you know the answer to that.” Several sneak peek clips have been released since the trailer’s release, including one of Martha talking about her son serving in the war and a highlight of several of the men involved in the Watergate scandal.
Is Gaslit available to watch online?
Gaslit will air on Starz exclusively on television and online. On Sundays at 12:01 a.m. ET, beginning April 24, new episodes of the series will be available to stream on the Starz website and app. The episodes will then air on Starz at 8:00 p.m. ET later that night.
Gaslit is also available to watch by adding Starz to your existing streaming services! For an additional $8.99 per month, Hulu and Amazon Prime subscribers can add Starz content to their subscriptions. Starz is also available for a one-week free trial on both of these services.
