On Red Table Talk, Monáe, who is scheduled to feature in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out 2, discussed her gender identification. Monáe announced on Twitter that she’s been nonbinary in 2020, although she did not elaborate on her experience. During the roundtable conversation with hostesses Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield Norris, the multitalented actress said, “I’m nonbinary, so I just don’t see myself as a woman, solely … I know who I am. I’ve been playing a version of some parts of me, but now I’m owning all of me.” Monáe, who has starred in films such as Hidden Figures, Antebellum, and Prime Video’s psychological thriller series Homecoming, went on to clarify her views on binary gender and how her identity is shaped by her religious beliefs.

“I feel like God is so much bigger than the ‘he’ or the ‘she.’ If I am from God, I am everything,” she said, “But I will always, always stand with women. I will always stand with Black women. But I just see everything beyond the binary.” Yet so, the actress continues to use she/her pronouns.

Monáe admitted that coming out to her mainly Baptist Christian family was difficult for her. “But I was ready, I was like, ‘You know what, if they don’t love me, don’t call me asking me for no money. You will not get my LGBTQIA+ money”, she added.

Knives Out 2 is a direct sequel to the 2019 film Knives Out, however it will include a completely new set of individuals and a new mystery for Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc to unravel. The premise is presently unknown, though a brief preview of the film was featured in a Netflix promotional video from February.
