The long-awaited sequel to MGM’s Vikings, Vikings: Valhalla, was recently released on Netflix. The second season of the show has already been filmed and is set to premiere in 2023, which will please fans of the show. Here’s everything we know about the second season of Vikings: Valhalla on Netflix so far.
Michael Hirst’s Netflix Original historical drama Vikings: Valhalla is a spin-off of the popular History Channel series Vikings. The series, like its predecessor, is produced by MGM Productions and aired for six seasons.
The events of Vikings: Valhalla take place one hundred years after the Great Viking army, led by Ragnar Lothbrok’s sons, set sail for England in search of vengeance for his death.
Vikings: Valhalla has not only been renewed for a second season, but it has also been renewed for a third season, which was announced ahead of time.
The reason for the early renewal is because the show received a large upfront order when it was first announced. A total of 24 episodes were ordered.
As part of the deal, Netflix also acquired the licensing rights to the original Vikings series, with Netflix UK and Netflix US set to receive seasons 1-6 in the coming years.
On March 9th, 2022, Netflix officially confirmed that Vikings: Valhalla will return for two more seasons.
It received 80.56 million hours of viewing in its first two days on the platform, making it the week’s second most-watched show.
The show was watched 265,550,000 times on Netflix between February 25th and April 3rd, 2022 (the first 37 days it was available).
With this new hourly data, making comparisons is difficult, but we can see that Vikings: Valhalla performed better (at least in the first 2-3 weeks) than The Last Kingdom, which was released in early 2022.
eb Stuart confirmed that he was “finishing the editing of the last episode of season two” around the time of season 1’s release. This indicates that the show will be completed for about a year before being released.
Season 3 is also getting ready to go into production. Netflix announced that production on the second and third seasons would begin in Spring 2022 as part of the confirmation of the second and third seasons. We’ve learned that they’ll be prepping throughout April in preparation for filming to begin in May 2022.
Season 3 is “very exciting,” according to Jeb Stuart, who also revealed that “my Vikings get out of Scandinavia, so we have lots of great surprises.”
