Geralt of Rivia is gearing up for a Netflix comeback. On Monday, the show’s Twitter account published the first shot from the set of The Witcher season 3, revealing that production for the third instalment had begun. Along with Tomek Baginski, Jason F. Brown, Sean Daniel, Mike Ostrowski, Steve Gaub, and Jarosaw Sawko, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich acts as showrunner and executive producers.

The image itself is very unremarkable. Geralt (Henry Cavill), Ciri (Freya Allen), and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) are seated in production chairs in a large, snowy field, as the adjacent team sets up for the next shot. Despite the fact that the snapshot doesn’t disclose much about the upcoming season, it’s good to know that filming has begun and the programme is returning. The Witcher’s account included a synopsis of the upcoming season:

As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Centra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever.

There’s no information on when Season 3 of The Witcher will be released. The first season of the show premiered in 2019, with the second season following in 2021 after multiple production delays due to COVID. Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, the showrunner, told TechRadar in December 2021 that season 3 will be based on The Time of Contempt, so we already had an idea of what to expect. That is author Andrzej Sapkowski’s second Witcher novel, after Blood of Elves and two short tale collections that comprised the first two seasons’ material.
