Morbius a Sony Pictures Entertainment film has finally been released after what feels like ages since the Movie was announced in November 2017. Sony announced earlier this year that it planned to create its own shared universe, which has since been dubbed Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). Starring Jarred Leto and written by  Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, the film was earlier set to release in July 2020 but was hit by COVID-19 and the release date was pushed to January 2022 but was delayed due to the huge success of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Following Venom in 2018 and Venom: Let There Be Carnage in 2020, Morbius is the third installment in the SSU. The film storyline revolves around Dr. Michael Morbius a brilliant researcher who is credited with developing insight into blood transfusion in the film. While Morbius is known for his accomplishments, he suffers from a fatal blood disease and consumes the blood of a vampire bat during a failed experiment. Thanks to his failed experiment Morbius gains power’s like a Vampire which perfectly set up his future at SSU.

Morbius and Venom are part of the same universe, even though Tom Hardy doesn’t appear in Morbius. Another of Spider-Man’s main antagonists will be introduced in Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s upcoming film Kraven the Hunter. There are two untitled Marvel films that Sony will release on June 23rd and October 6th, 2023. Marvel Cinematic Universe connections are teased in both Morbius and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. As a result of the new MCU shared rights agreement between Sony and Marvel Studios, Sony was in the process of creating a completely separate universe from the MCU. Several spinoff projects centered on Spider-Man villains and supporting characters were scheduled to launch in conjunction with The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
