50 years of ‘The Godfather’ to be honoured at 94th Academy Awards

The Godfather, Francis Ford Coppola’s crime movie from 1972 is completing its 50 years in its cinematic journey. The movie is based on the novel, The Godfather by Puzo,1969. The Godfather premiered on 14th March 1972 and then widely all over the United States on 24th March 1972. It became the highest hit of box office in the year 1972.

At the 45th Academy Awards, The Godfather bagged several awards such as Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay and had others as nominations under Coppola for Best Director and Best Supporting Actor included Pacino, Caan, and Duvall. The Godfather earned its name as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made particularly in the gangster genre. It has been ranked as the second greatest film in American Cinema after Citizen Kane by the American Film Institute.

The Godfather is a trilogy with the sequels released as The Godfather II in 1974 and The Godfather III in1990. Robert Duvall, now of age 91, acted in the Godfather movie as Tom Hagen : Corleone consigliere lawyer, and unofficial adopted member of the Corleone family. The story mainly involved around the chronicles of the Corleone family under Vito Corleone (Brando) and the journey of Michael Corleone (Pacino) to become the ruthless mafia boss.

On the 50th Anniversary of The Godfather, Duvall revealed about rereleasing the movie in 4k UHD and digital format. The Godfather to be in theatres as 50th anniversary restoration and celebration. With the 94th Academy Awards being held, the event decided to honour iconic film franchises, the films which are completing the milestones and the legendarily popular films will be celebrated at the night of the premiered award show. That includes James Bond as well as The Godfather. This was released by the producers of the event at a press conference , “We have some surprises around that. Wink, wink,” Will Packer, who is producing the show, said without revealing further details.
