For a series about rebirth and second chances, The Crow remake might finally redeem three failed movies and a forgotten TV series. The Crow is a movie that struggled for a modern remake considering it’s one of the defining comic book movies of all the time. But now it might become the movie which makes up for its failed and forgotten sequels.
After tragedy of late Brandon Lee and his critical success film the franchise struggled to recreate its gothic charm. It seems oddly fitting for reboot of a series that is about unfinished business, second chances and rebirth. The Crow already has a arguably low bar to soar over.
Several actors have been rumoured to be involved with the reboot. Bradley Cooper, Tom Hiddleston and Jason Momoa were said to be a part of the production of The Crow at some point. Now in 2022, James O’ Barr’s comic went back into development with a casting list and director announcement to follow. The Crow (1994) was considered as a gothic masterpiece while its sequels were poorly reviewed and soon forgotten. The Crow: Salvation and The Crow: Wicked Prayer struggled to stand out, suffering from a lack of budget, negative reviews, and limited release. And as of the TV release, The Crow: Stairway to Heaven was received positively but was cancelled prematurely.
A reboot must establish its own identity visually and story wise to stand apart from the original movie. A new adaption of The Crow is coming but it doesn’t have to be subpar. The sequels may have buried The Crow but there’s still a chance for the series to soar again. However there will be always a concern about reboot, revival of a series on the big screen.
