Apple TV+’s The Afterparty Is A Hilarious Murder Mystery

After working with each other for so long on films such as 21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie and Spider Man: Into The Spider-Verse, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are back with a series. The Afterparty is an eight-episode comedy murder-thriller with a cast of prominent comic actors such as Tiffany Hadish and Dave Franco. The plot is that there is a high school reunion party in the beachfacing mansion of one of the characters called Xavier who is a pop star and is also the host. The get together goes wrong when Xavier falls his death and two detectives named Danner and Culp are assigned to the case. Other character of The Afterparty are Aniq who is a nerd, Yasper an aspiring artist, Zoe, obnoxious bully Brett, hot girl Chelsea and the very awkward Walt. Since all of these characters, except the Danner and Culp, are suspects and have different story about the previous night, each episode of the show is based on a character’s version of the previous night. Aniq’s account is full of romance-comedy because he came in the hope of wooing his high school crush Zoe whereas Brett believes he some badass action-movie hunk and Yasper, who wants to be a musician, gives a version of previous night filled with music performances.

One of the innovative features of The Afterparty is the sixth episode which is entirely based in animated form and contains fantasy. Zoe’s version of the story. Her story revolves comprises of shallow men around her and self-love. Due to its intriguing subject and a cast full of actors who made a mark in comedy genre, the show is what will be expected from Miller and Lord duo. One of the main characteristics of the show which is the curiosity it is going to provide to the viewers who will find themselves engaged to see the various genres in each episode. Despite having multiple genres, the series don’t lose track of the storyline as everyone is connected with each other. Building character development via different versions is a good strategy by the makers as we the audience suspect anyone to be the killer. The Afterparty is a classic whodunit which gives a series of clues to the viewers so that we develop our own theories.

The story is narrated by the character of Aniq who later becomes the main suspect in the murder. He is also the protagonist. Engaging, intriguing and full of hilarious performances, The Afterparty is a must watch for those who are into crime and comedy.
