The Batman eventually released in theaters this weekend, breaking box office records, after delays due to COVID-19 and advertising. The Batman became DC’s highest-grossing film since 2016’s Suicide Squad, thanks to a strong weekend box office.
The Batman, a new action film starring Matt Reeves, had the highest opening weekend of any film in 2022. The latest DCEU film grossed $248.5 million in its first three days at the global box office, an amount that would raise an eyebrow even for millionaire playboy Bruce Wayne.
The Warner Bros. film had a tremendous box office debut, grossing a whopping $57 million on its first day, including preview screenings.
The film already had the largest opening weekend of 2022, with $50 million in the bank. Sony’s ‘Uncharted,’ starring Tom Holland, came in second with a $44 million three-day box office opening.
The Batman is a remake of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight story, directed by Matt Reeves, using new actors and characters from the comic series.
The Batman was supposed to be published in June 2021, however owing to COVID, it was pushed back to October 2021, and the final release date was scheduled for 2022. Unlike previous Warner Bros. films, the film will be released exclusively in theatres and will premiere on HBO Max on April 19th, 2022.
The film had the biggest opening weekend, grossing more than $120 million, and it is on track to gross more than $130 million by the end of Monday. Dawn of the Planets of the Apes, Matt Reeves’ last film, grossed $73 million in its first weekend. Similarly, Robert Pattinson’s Twilight /saga had a $100 million opening weekend.
It may fall short of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight ($158 million) and Zack Snyder’s superhero crossover ‘Batman versus Superman: Dawn of Justice’ ($166 million).
Robert Pattinson is the sixth actor to play the Caped Crusader in the next Batman picture. Catwoman is played by Zoe Kravitz, Pennyworth is played by Andy Serkis, the Penguin is played by Collin Ferrell, and the Riddler is played by Paul Dano.
There were no new releases over the weekend, allowing The Batman to take center stage. Despite stiff competition from superhero films, Spider-Man: No Way Home is still in the top five at the box office three months after its release. So far in 2022, the Batman has had the finest opening weekend.
