Lucasfilm is in talks about the future of Star Wars following the Sequel Trilogy

Jon Favreau, the creator of The Mandalorian, disclosed that Lucasfilm is exploring possibilities for the future of the Star Wars franchise, which may occur after the events of the sequel trilogy. Despite the controversy surrounding the trilogy’s conclusion in 2019 with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which was marketed as the culmination of the Skywalker saga, several characters from the trilogy remain, and the fact that the Skywalker lineage has come to an end does not preclude the possibility of the next Star Wars film incorporating characters from the sequel trilogy.

During an interview with Moovy TV, Favreau mentioned the ongoing conversations within Lucasfilm regarding the management of the timeline and the prospect of exploring untold Star Wars stories set after the sequel trilogy.

“There’s definitely a conversation that’s going on. And also what happens after the sequel trilogy, because the sequel trilogy only takes place over the course of a few years. And it’s a big thing on the screen, and it’s very eventful. But it is a relatively brief moment in history over the course of the thousands of years that Star Wars takes place. And so what happens after it is interesting too, and I know that there’s some discussion, exploration going on about what happens after it.”

Given his role as a storyteller in the time leading up to the sequel trilogy, Favreau would naturally have a stake in the discussions that could influence the direction of the Star Wars franchise. With the time period following The Rise of Skywalker being an open canvas, there is ample opportunity for fresh creators to bring new ideas and perspectives to the table.

When will Lucasfilm unveil the future of Star Wars?

The sequel trilogy received mixed reactions, raising doubts about whether the next Star Wars film should be set during that period. It has been reported that Damon Lindelof’s Star Wars movie will be announced in April at the Star Wars Celebration, and some characters from the sequel trilogy might be included. Whether it’s the main protagonists like Rey and Finn or less prominent characters returning to the big screen is uncertain and depends on the direction of the story.

The current state of the Star Wars galaxy is a repetition of the post-Return of the Jedi era, and repeating the same stories from 4 ABY would not be well-received. Since the most intriguing character from the sequel era, Ben Solo, is no longer present, and the Skywalker family is officially gone, any stories after The Rise of Skywalker must focus on either the New Republic’s resurgence or Rey’s efforts to complete Luke’s Jedi Order. Although these themes could be explored through TV shows, it’s probable that the next Star Wars movie will continue from the events of the sequel trilogy. More information from Lucasfilm is anticipated in a month’s time.
