'All Quiet on the Western Front' Breaks Streaming Records with 150 Million Hours Watched

According to Variety, the movie “All Quiet on the Western Front” has garnered significant attention since its release on Netflix in October. The film has now exceeded 150 million hours of total viewership. The plot of the anti-war epic, directed by Edward Berger, revolves around a young protagonist named Paul Bäumer, who enlists in the German Army with his friends after being encouraged by authority figures to become heroes by fighting in the war. However, upon arriving at the battlefront, they are confronted with the harsh realities of armed conflict.

Considering that the movie has a duration of 147 minutes, the total number of viewership hours, which is over 150 million, is equivalent to more than a million complete views of the film. However, it should be noted that this calculation also includes viewers who only watched parts of the movie and did not see the ending. Although it is unclear how many times the entire movie was watched, the fact that the film accumulated 150 million minutes of screen time is a remarkable achievement and a testament to its excellence.

In a recent interview with Collider, Berger discussed his intention to use physical objects to visually convey the themes of the movie, including the scarf that appears repeatedly throughout the narrative. The director also praised the 1929 novel with the same title, which inspired the film, emphasizing the significance of preserving the book’s essence. This essence highlights the destructive effects of war on the youthful innocence of soldiers and the tragic loss of millions of lives during the years of fighting.

The 2023 Oscars Ceremony Is Right Around The Corner

This year, the film received nine Academy Awards nominations, including significant categories such as Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score. The soundtrack for the movie was composed by German pianist Volker Bertelmann, who performs under the name Hauschka. Bertelmann has experience working on award-nominated films, having previously managed the music for the movie Lion. It is yet to be determined how many accolades the film All Quiet on the Western Front will receive when the Academy Awards ceremony occurs on Sunday, March 12th.
