Guy Ritchie, the writer, and the director are well-known for his distinctive style and approach to every project he takes on. One of his most famous works is the 2009 film Sherlock Holmes, followed by Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in 2011. These films, starring Robert Downey Jr., offer a fresh take on the famous and beloved character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
They were a commercial success, with the first film earning $524 million worldwide during its theatrical run, a figure that was later surpassed by its sequel with a total of $543.4 million. Two films also feature Jude Law plays Dr. John Watson and Rachel McAdams plays Irene Adler.
Given the success of the previous two films in the series, it seems logical that a third installment would be in the works, and rumors about such a project have been circulating for some time. Recently, Steven Weintraub, a writer for Collider, interviewed Guy Ritchie about his upcoming film Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, during which the topic of a third Sherlock Holmes movie was broached.
Weintraub queried whether a third film was still on the table or if it was no longer a possibility.
All We Know About Sherlock Holmes 3
Despite the fact that it has been more than ten years since the release of A Game of Shadows, the series’ long hiatus is not due to a lack of effort. Plans for Sherlock Holmes 3 were initially announced by Warner Bros. in 2011, shortly after the second film’s release, but the project underwent many different revisions, with various writers and ideas being considered.
In 2019, it was revealed that Dexter Fletcher (known for directing Bohemian Rhapsody) would take over as director from Ritchie, and a release date of 2020 was tentatively set. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was indefinitely postponed. As of now, the future of the movie is uncertain, but based on his comments, Ritchie is more than willing to assist whenever work on the project resumes.
