We all know what happened at the 2009 VMAs. The then 32-year-old Kanye West climbed up the stage to interrupt Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for the ‘Best Music Video’ award. The incident went on to become one of the most discussed events of the century in music.

Taylor Lautner, who was dating Taylor Swift back then, talks about the incident and makes rare comments in the podcast ‘The Squeeze’

When Lautner’s wife, Taylor Dome asked him which career moment he’d choose to relive again, the actor replied, “Probably the 2009 VMAs when I presented the award to Taylor, I was unaware that the Kanye thing was not a skit.”

The ‘Valentine’s Day’ actor was the one who presented Swift with the award after the singer’s ‘You Belong With Me’ won in the Best Music Video category. That was when Mr. West rushed onto the stage.

West, now 45, interrupted Swift’s speech by grabbing the microphone from her and said, “Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’mma let you finish. But Beyonce has one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time,”

Everyone in the room including Beyonce was too shocked to even comprehend Mr. West’s ridiculous act. Even Lautner was seen in distress.

Lautner continued, “I can barely hear it. I can’t see them. I’m just assuming that this whole thing was a practiced and rehearsed skit because why else would Kanye West be jumping up on the stage, interrupting Taylor Swift? It just didn’t make sense. He jumped off, she finished [and] the second she turned back around and I saw her face for the first time, I was like, ‘Oh. No, that wasn’t good,”

West was criticized by the music fans and also by the celebrities that night. Singer P!nk tweeted, “Kanye West is the biggest piece of shit on earth”

Beyonce later invited Swift on to the stage that night to finish her speech and gave the then 19-year-old a warm hug.

Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner parted their ways later and the singer even reportedly wrote a song named ‘Back to December’ about her time together with the actor in which she sings, ‘I miss your tan skin, your sweet smile; So good to me, so right; And how you held me in your arms that September night; The first time you ever saw me cry”
