While filming a scene for a movie, Gerard Butler sustained burns from acid accidentally

Gerard Butler, who plays the lead in the forthcoming action thriller Plane, tells the tale of how he unintentionally burnt himself with hazardous acid while filming the movie. Butler is most recognized for his roles in the action films 300, Law Abiding Citizen, Olympus Has Fallen, and Greenland, among others. While not all of his movies receive rave reviews from critics, the Has Fallen franchise alone is preparing for its fourth installment and the movies normally do well with crowds. In Butler’s most recent film, Plane, the actor plays pilot Brodie Torrance, who is forced to make an emergency landing in a hostile environment during a storm.

Butler recalled one especially horrific incident involving burning his hands and face with phosphoric acid while filming Plane in a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

The actor claims that while acting like he was fixing a component of the jet, he somehow got acid on his hands and it ended up over his face and even down his neck. Butler claims that when the staff attempted to assist him by rinsing it off with water, it simply made the situation worse. See Butler’s detailed account of the incident below:

“It was on the scene where I’m trying to find something that’s wrong with the plane before we can take off for this final sequence. And it’s something in the wheel, so it’s a brake. Now I’m sticking my hand between these two wheels, kind of pretending that I know what I’m doing. Whatever is in there – every time I bring my hands out they’re covered in blood and green fluid. I don’t know what this green fluid is. We’re also shooting in Puerto Rico so I’m covered in sweat. And the adrenaline, the nose is running, everything, and I guess especially with COVID, you realize why this thing spreads because I must have been rubbing my face.

“And suddenly it’s in my throat, it’s in my mouth, it’s up my nose, it’s in my eyes. It’s burning my face, and I mean burning. And it turns out this is essentially phosphoric acid. And the airline pilots that were there watching go, ‘No!’ They’re trying to put water on my face. ‘Don’t put water. It’ll make it worse!’ And I’m just like burning alive, so it was intense. And it actually burned for hours, but it was great for the sequence.”

Expectations for Gerard Butler’s Film About a Plane

Like many of Butler’s recent movies, Plane like many of Butler’s recent movies appears to be an action-packed thrill experience. Mike Colter, who portrays convicted killer Louis Gaspare, co-stars with Butler in the Jean-François Richet-directed film. The characters of Butler and Colter will have to work together once the passengers are held captive by a local group of extremists, as seen in the Plane trailers. The movie also includes Lilly Krug, Remi Adeleke, Daniella Pineda, Tony Goldwyn, Paul Ben-Victor, Tara Westwood, Joey Slotnick, Kate Rachesky, Kelly Gale, and Yoson An in addition to Butler and Colter. Charles Cumming and J.P. Davis, who also authored the Chris Pine-starring film The Contractor, created the screenplay for Plane.

Perhaps not unexpectedly, the majority of the early reviews for Plane have been favorable. The movie has received high marks from critics for its direct action style and Butler’s leading-man appeal, even if, at its core, it is a fairly conventional action movie. In-Plane, Butler uses a gun to kill enemies, just as in the Olympus Has Fallen films. Butler’s character probably has some form of military history, however, it’s unclear exactly why they are so skilled with military equipment. According to the teaser, Brodie and Louis’ shared military experience may help them get along as they work together to free the abducted passengers.

Even while it seems like Butler’s most recent film won’t be significantly breaking the action movie pattern, there is a definite audience for films that offer precisely what is promised, so to speak. The plane’s plot is immediately apparent from the title and the trailer, and it may be a terrific way to unwind and take in some quality action sequences for a couple of hours in a theatre. Butler’s acid mishap appears not to have been included in the finished version of Plane, but the actor’s tale makes for an amusing piece of behind-the-scenes information.
