The connection between the ‘Penguin’ show and ‘The Batman 2’ – as per Matt Reeves

According to director Matt Reeves, Batman 2 will be connected to the upcoming The Penguin spinoff series. Reeves was previously tapped to direct Ben Affleck’s solo Batman film, but that project was shelved, inspiring him to create his own distinct Gotham City subplot for the live-action DC film. Following Batman’s popularity, Reeves started expanding that universe, and there are a number of spinoff projects in various states of production. One of these is the Penguin series, in which Oswald Cobblepot, nicknamed the Penguin, will be played by Colin Farrell again in The Batman.

Reeves described how the HBO Max The Penguin miniseries paves the way for Robert Pattinson’s next journey as the Dark Knight in The Batman 2 during an interview with Collider. According to The Penguin’s primary actor Colin Farrell, Batman’s upcoming chapter will need to be correctly set up. According to the director’s remarks, crucial story pieces would be skipped in The Penguin and then picked up in The Batman 2. As a result, it appears that the DC series is significant to Reeves’ entire Batman world. See the complete quotation below:

“There’s actually a whole little fabric of things we’re wanting to do, the way we’re doing with [the] Penguin and how that comes back into how that will lead into the sequel, and what that sequel is going to be.”

An in-depth look into the Penguin show

The connection between the 'Penguin' show and 'The Batman 2' - as per Matt Reeves 2

Reeves’ plans for The Batman 2 call for The Penguin to play a significant role, and Farrell is eager to bring the character back to the big screen. According to the actor, the debut episode of “The Penguin” show had an intriguing screenplay that he found “delectable and so odd” and it matches the character’s on-page persona. This statement from Farrell indicates that the show will feature entertaining elements such as Penguin’s car chase with Batman.

Farrell also stated that the DC series should have a running time of six to eight hours or around six to eight episodes for the miniseries. The Penguin’s narrative, which sees Farrell’s Penguin ascend to become the criminal monarch of Gotham City, is revealed to have been inspired by the plot of the film Scarface. Batman paved the way for Penguin by having former criminal leader Carmine Falcone suffer a terrible end in the film. With Falcone dead and Gotham City submerged in a massive flood as a result of Batman’s conclusion, the Penguin had a power vacuum that he could take advantage of in his HBO Max miniseries.
