Blumhouse and Universal’s most recent horror movie, M3GAN, has given 2023 a violent start. This weekend’s box office is poised to be slayed by the movie about an evil AI companion thanks to a never-endingly amusing marketing campaign and M3GAN’s funny but deadly demeanour. Despite that, many people have compared this new killer doll to the iconic Chucky from the horror genre. Late last year, the two even engaged in a humorous Twitter argument. Now, Chucky creator Don Mancini has welcomed horror’s newest icon to the killer doll family on M3GAN’s opening weekend.

Given Mancini’s illustrious horror background, it’s good to see these two deranged dolls getting along at last. On Twitter and Instagram Mancini penned, “Welcome to the dollhouse @meetm3gan A tip of the hat to the new kid in the block on her opening weekend! Can’t wait to see you in action and I know @chuckyisreal feels the same.”

Everything to know about Chucky

Chucky was born from low-budget horror’s poor roots, just like M3GAN. In 1988’s Child’s Play, which was directed by Tom Holland from a screenplay co-written by Mancini, Chucky made his debut. We were nervously uncertain as to whether Chucky was actually alive or a figment of his owner Andy’s imagination thanks to this fantastic horror movie full with dread. It successfully appealed to children’s biggest dread of toys coming to life. However, as we have all come to see, Brad Dourif’s portrayal of the serial killer Charles Lee Ray in the form of Chucky was accurate.

The 1990 film Child’s Play 2 and the 1991 film Child’s Play 3 are the first sequels to the first movie, which was a genuine hit. By that point, Chucky had become so well-known that Mancini decided to completely dispense with the Child’s Play moniker. Since 1998’s Bride of Chucky, which had a stronger humorous element, the franchise has gotten three more movies: Seed of Chucky, Curse of Chucky, and Cult of Chucky, in addition to a hugely successful Syfy TV series that just wrapped up its second season in late 2022. The original Child’s Play was also remade in 2019 by MGM, but Mancini wasn’t involved.

The scene is set for M3GAN to be a huge success because of Chucky’s recent rebirth as a horrifyingly entertaining character and Annabelle’s ten-year presence in The Conjuring film series. It’s already off to a hot start, earning $2.75 million in previews on Thursday and expected to gross approximately $20 million throughout its opening weekend. Additionally, that would allow it to spend its $12 million budget in a single weekend. Not that M3GAN needs the endorsement, but her senior Chucky is really proud of her. M3GAN is poised to become Universal’s next significant horror franchise, given its strong box office performance and stellar reviews. Additionally, genre fans are yearning for M3GAN because it shares a studio with Chucky.
