Despite a delay, Stephen Amell has confirmed that Heels season 2 would still happen. Heels, a Michael Waldron production that will make its Starz debut in August 2021, is set in the Georgia hamlet of Duffy. The show examines the family-run wrestling organisation Duffy Wrestling League to highlight small-town professional wrestling (DWL). In the first season of Heels, brothers Jack and Ace Spade argue over how to run the DWL in the wake of their father’s passing. They have to accept what actually matters to them along the journey.

Despite the fact that Heels season 2’s filming, which commenced in March 2022 and ended several months later, has not yet resulted in the release of any trailers or information on when the episodes could air, Amell provides an update on his wrestling series during a guest visit on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum. He discusses the cause of the delay and how it’s related to the changes taking on at Starz and Lionsgate, seeming optimistic that Heels season 2 will be released this year despite the interview having been recorded in September

Amell said, “Heels is coming out eventually. They are now in the process of, as best I understand it, ‘untangling’ that partnership.’ As they are untangling everything, they are figuring out which assets belong to whom. So as a result, we wrapped filming [Season 2] on the first of July and we don’t have a premiere date, let alone a trailer, let alone an indication of Season 3. I know there are meetings that are starting to happen about writing for Season 3, but in the normal order of things, we would have more information than we do right now. I would be worried if I didn’t think the season was spectacular, and I think the season is spectacular. It’s way better. More story, more scope…and it also felt more like a cohesive season because we actually shot it in order and were subject to COVID ‘hiccups’ but not COVID catastrophes. I’m still very, very confident that there’s going to be more [Heels] to film.”

Lionsgate is in the midst of spinning off its studio from Starz, which it acquired in 2016 for $4.4 million and uses to help produce shows like Heels. Starz has cancelled and withdrawn a couple of its original shows while waiting for that process, which is anticipated to be finished over the next months. In addition to removing Becoming Elizabeth and Step Up, the network overturned the renewal of Dangerous Liaisons and cancelled it after one season. It is unknown at this time whether these selections are connected to the Starz-Lionsgate split or whether there are intentions to sell the rights to these shows.
