It was announced in October that a fourth The Conjuring film was in the works, much to the delight of horror fans who like their scares with a healthy dose of romance, with David Leslie and Johnson-McGoldrick returning to pen the script. Johnson-McGoldrick previously worked on The Conjuring 2 and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. The third Conjuring film grossed more than $2 billion at the global box office in 2021, making it the most successful horror franchise in history.

The Conjuring director James Wan announced this in an interview with Collider to promote his new killer doll horror film M3GAN. During the conversation, he was asked about the next Conjuring film and Wan’s future plans for the franchise. Wan was quick to assure fans that this is a franchise close to his heart and that the creative team takes great care when crafting a story about Ed and Lorraine Warren.

He said, “Yeah, we are working on it right now. With the Conjuring films, we are very precious about [them]. And so we kind of want to just take our time to make sure we get it right and to make sure the emotion of the Warren stories that we want to tell, and moving into, and potentially wrapping up, we just want to make sure that it’s the right thing, the right story that we’re telling.”

Along with returning writer Johnson-McGoldrick, stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga have been confirmed to reprise their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren in the fourth film. Little else is known about the upcoming sequel, though the core films in the franchise always borrow from the real Warrens’ case files in terms of plot. However, their infamous case files cover thousands of hauntings, so this doesn’t exactly narrow it down. No other cast members have been announced, and based on Wan’s comments, it appears that the fourth film’s story is still in the works.

The Conjuring 4 has no director hooked up yet, but Michael Chaves, who directed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, is currently filming The Nun 2, a prequel to the franchise. The second Nun film will once again follow Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene, and Wan has hinted that both Farmiga sisters’ characters may cross paths in-universe.The Nun 2 will be released in theatres on September 8, 2023.
