Chris Miller is talking about the demands placed on the production of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Miller co-wrote and produced the next animated movie, which is a follow-up to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse from last year. The first film’s main character was Miles Morales, a teenager from New York City who, following Spider-death, Man’s discovers his own superhuman talents and the existence of alternative realities, exposing viewers to many incarnations of the title character. In the next film, which will be released in cinemas on June 2, Miles reunites with Spider-Gwen and ventures throughout the universe to try to protect other Spider-People from a lethal menace.

Fans have been eager to return to the Spider-Man world ever since Miller hinted at Miles’ journey in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse back in November. However, the co-writer recently said that the Spider-Man sequels are under pressure. Miller stated in an interview with The Wrap that providing “something that people didn’t even realize that they wanted is crucial.” He continued that it can be difficult to provide anything distinct, and the movie shouldn’t seem too much like the first. See what Miller had to say about the demands of producing Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse after the break:

There’s a lot of pressure on these films because you want the movie to deliver an engaging story and an emotional journey. You also want it to be all the things that people are hoping for but then also you need it to be something that people didn’t even know that they wanted… Because the whole idea of these movies is we’re showing you something you’ve never seen before. And if we just did a fun mild story that felt like the first movie, I think it would be a bit disappointing. You want to feel like you’re seeing visuals that you’ve never experienced before. To do all of those things and do them in a way that’s engaging and satisfying is a big challenge, but it’s also part of the reason why we do these things. That’s the goal, just to make you laugh and cry and experience something that you’ve never experienced before.
