The now-famous dance moment from Wednesday on Netflix has been reproduced once more, this time by Olympic figure skater Kamila Valieva.
At the most recent 2023 Russian Figure Skating Championships, Valieva showcased her performance inspired by Wednesday while wearing a dress resembling that worn by Ortega in the show and black pigtails. Valieva, 16, began with a tribute to Thing and the original Addams Family theme song before beginning a routine in which she reenacted Wednesday’s famous dance scene from Season 1. The tune changed to “Goo Goo Muck” by The Cramps during this section of her performance, which is the song Wednesday danced to in the series.
Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary” remix, which Valieva used to end her routine, has become popular on TikTok as a result of users using the music to duplicate the Wednesday dance. According to DW, three months before her scheduled departure for the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022, Valieva tested positive for a cardiac drug that was prohibited. This led to her becoming involved in a doping controversy. Although she won a silver medal for her performance on Wednesday at the Russian Figure Skating Championships, the controversy may result in a four-year suspension that would prevent her from skating in the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The Source of Wednesday’s Popular Dance Scene
In a recent interview, Ortega said that a combination of influences, including “Wednesday’s performance was influenced by Siouxsie Sioux, Bob Fosse’s Rich Man’s Frug, Lisa Loring, Lene Lovich, Denis Lavant, and vintage footage of goths dancing in clubs in the 1980s. “Goo Goo Muck” was chosen as the right song for the dance sequence because it “had to be lively, wacky, and lend itself to Wednesday’s personality,” according to music supervisors Jen Malone and Nicole Weisberg.
Wednesday is a live-action supernatural mystery series produced by Tim Burton and directed by Al Gough and Miles Millar that follows the title character through her years as a student at Nevermore Academy. The eight-episode television series Wednesday follows the titular Addams as she struggles to control her developing psychic talent, put an end to a horrific killing spree ravaging the nearby town of Jericho, and unravel a 25-year-old mystery.
Wednesday is a spinoff of The Addams Family, which was initially produced by American artist Charles Addams in 1938 as a single-panel comic. It was first revealed in October 2020. The Netflix series debuted in November to largely favorable reviews, with the majority of viewers and reviewers applauding Ortega’s portrayal. Despite there being no official word on a second season, Gough and Millar have already hinted at possible plotlines should Netflix give them the go-ahead.
