Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse by Sony set several milestones for the animation genre. Miles Morales’ debut animated film received overwhelmingly positive reviews from both fans and reviewers for its visual and creative creativity. The stakes are considerably greater now that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is coming out because it will have six distinct animation styles and a tonne of new and familiar Spider-People. Franchise producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller discuss “breaking the pipelines” once more in a recent interview with The Wrap.

The team will attempt to surpass its Oscar-winning predecessor with Sony’s much-anticipated sequel Across the Spider-Verse. With their 2018 film, Lord and Miller succeeded in creating an immersive Spider-Verse that made audiences feel as though they had entered a comic book. This was accomplished by combining CGI with line work, painting, and dots, among other comic book methods. Speaking about the follow-up, Miller disclosed that they attempted to “break the pipes all over again” in the new film. Everyone is excited about it, rather than just being afraid.

Lord agreed with Miller’s assessment of the film, calling it “certainly more crazy.” “We finally got some people nervous,” he said. I believe we accomplished our task. Miller continued by saying that these movies are under a lot of pressure to “provide an interesting tale and an emotional journey.” Fans are undoubtedly very excited about Miles’ return; the promotional material that has been made public so far promises an upside-down world, a lot of Spider-People, and a journey across the Spider-Verse, while also focusing on Miles’ struggle to balance being a good young adult and being Spider-Man. Miller remarked:

“Because the whole idea of these movies is we’re showing you something you’ve never seen before. And if we just did a fun mild story that felt like the first movie, I think it would be a bit disappointing. You want to feel like you’re seeing visuals that you’ve never experienced before. To do all of those things and do them in a way that’s engaging and satisfying is a big challenge but it’s also part of the reason why we do these things. That’s the goal, just to make you laugh and cry and experience something that you’ve never experienced before.”

In addition to others, the film stars Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, Oscar Isaac as Spider-Man 2099, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew, and Shameik Moore as Miles Morales.

A sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, will be released on March 29, 2024, after the June 2, 2023 release of Across the Spider-Verse. The trailer is provided below:
