After having an incredible run in theatres, Top Gun: Maverick keeps setting records as the year’s biggest blockbuster has now overtaken The Avengers as the most watched movie on Paramount+ worldwide. The movie shattered Paramount’s prior record, held by Sonic the Hedgehog 2, by 60% when it made its streaming debut on December 22.

Along with the movie’s incredible success on Paramount’s streaming service, the film had an impact on other titles’ viewership, such as the first Top Gun, which saw a 400% spike in viewers. Top Gun: Maverick’s release has sparked renewed interest in other significant films in Cruise’s career, as evidenced by a 140% increase in viewing for Tom Cruise-starring Mission Impossible sequels alongside the 1986 original.

Brian Robbins, President and CEO of Paramount Pictures and Chief Content Officer, Movies and Kids & Family, Paramount+ said in a statement, “The runaway success of this film across theatrical, digital and now in streaming is an undeniable proof point demonstrating the power of Paramount’s multi-platform release strategy.”

Top Gun: Maverick debuted in theatres earlier this summer to immediate critical acclaim, with an impressive 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 99% audience rating. This was after numerous COVID-related delays. The movie, which received a rare A+ on Cinemascore, stood out for its incredible box office endurance during the summer with a $1.48 billion worldwide haul, becoming the year’s highest-grossing movie and Cruise’s most lucrative project to date. The movie earned $719 million in total in the United States and Canada, passing Black Panther to rank fifth in domestic box office revenue behind Avatar. Top Gun: Maverick is now breaking records on Paramount’s streaming platform, and its popularity isn’t about to decline any time soon.
