‘A Christmas Story’ probably received the most viewers during the last weekend, but Avatar: The Way of Water continued to lead the domestic box office. James Cameron’s eagerly anticipated sequel managed to earn an excellent sum in its second weekend despite the wintery weather, leading the 4-day period with $95.5 million. Avatar: The Way of Water, which was screened in 4,202 theatres across the US, earned $19.5 million on Friday of this week before falling to $15 million on Christmas Eve. On Sunday, the daily domestic revenue nearly doubled to $29.5 million. At $31.5 million on Monday, the movie’s weekend box office took the biggest leap yet.

The movie’s domestic total over its two weekends has increased to $293.2 million with the $95.5 million it earned over the four-day weekend, bringing the total to $1 billion at the global box office, where it has now surpassed $950 million. The last movie to have its second weekend in theatres when Christmas occurred on a Sunday was Rogue One: A Star Wars Story from 2016, which earned $96.1 million in its second weekend, barely beating out Avatar: The Way of Water. The $293.2 million, while a large sum, barely accounts for 26% of the 2009 film’s first 11 days when compared to its 2009 predecessor.

James Cameron’s eagerly anticipated adventure, which is set more than ten years after the first movie, will send Jake and his family through areas of Pandora that have never been explored by viewers in the search for safety. The RDA has increased its mining operations on the planet, so they are looking for a way to protect their family while also defending themselves from the advancing danger. The franchise is moving to a new, aquatic region, and the trailers so far have shown some absolutely breathtaking vistas. A cast brimming with new and returning talent is appropriate for the revival of a film this revolutionary.

Avatar: The Way of Water’s success will will determine the fate of the Avatar franchise

The success of Avatar: The Way of Water at the box office will determine the fate of the Avatar franchise. Cameron is now filming Avatar 3 with The Way of Water with an eye on a Christmas 2024 release. Cameron has long promised three further sequels. But if Avatar 2 does poorly at the box office, it appears likely that Avatar 3 will fare much worse, leading to the cancellation of Avatar 4 and Avatar 5.

On the overall size of this expensive sequel, its opening weekend isn’t exactly outstanding. Avatar: The Way of Water has already made one of the top ten global box office debuts of 2022, but it will be incredibly difficult for it to surpass the year’s top picture, the legacy sequel Top Gun: Maverick.
