Next Goal Wins, a highly anticipated soccer movie from Taika Waititi, will have to learn its lesson the hard way as its release date has been postponed again again. Searchlight Pictures had planned for Next Goal Wins to hit theatres on April 21, 2023. The movie’s release date has since changed to September 22, 2023.
The cinematic adaptation of Mike Brett and Steve Jamison’s 2014 documentary of the same name, Next Goal Wins, was first teased back in 2019. The upcoming movie follows the American Samoa national team as they hire Thomas Rongen as their new coach in an effort to improve after losing to Australia with an amazing 31-0 score. Waititi, whose popularity has soared in recent years because to the success of his movies Jojo Rabbit and Thor: Ragnarok, directed and co-wrote the movie.
Thor: Love and Thunder, his follow-up to Ragnarok, received mixed reviews but managed to gross over $700 million at the global box office. But viewers have praised him for his distinct blend of wry humour and inventive visual directing, which has become a trademark of his work. We still don’t know how much of this will affect Next Goal Wins.
Iain Morris and Waititi both contributed to the writing of the movie. In the movie, Michael Fassbender plays Thomas Rongen, a Dutch-American soccer coach. Along with Next Goal Wins, Fassbender will also be seen in The Killer and Kung Fury 2. Along Michael Fassbender, the movie also stars Will Arnett, Oscar Kightley, David Fane, Uli Latukefu, Beulah Koale, Lehi Falepapalangi, and Elisabeth Moss from the Mad Men series.
Even while there has been much anticipation for the movie, it was actually shot years ago, and since then, the release date has changed multiple times. The eagerly anticipated movie doesn’t yet have a trailer. The current plan is for Next Goal Wins to hit theatres on September 22, 2023. On Prime Video and Vudu, you can buy and watch the documentary Next Goal Wins.
